About the GATE RA paper

Robotics & Automation (RA) is a new addition to the GATE exam, introduced for the GATE 2027 cycle by IIT Madras, the organising institute for that year. It is not a rebrand or a renamed version of an existing paper. It is a fresh test code (RA) added to the GATE paper list, alongside other syllabus revisions made for 2027. This is the first year the paper exists, so there is no history of past cutoffs, difficulty levels or applicant numbers to draw on.

The published structure is a 100-mark, 3-hour computer-based exam split into three parts. General Aptitude is a fixed 15 marks, as in every GATE paper. Part A is compulsory and worth 60 marks, covering Engineering Mathematics, Basics of Mechatronics (circuits, digital logic, sensors, actuators, basic programming) and Principles of Robotics and Automation (robot classification, kinematics, coordinate transformations, industrial automation and CNC/PLC topics). Part B is optional and worth 25 marks: a candidate chooses either B1 (Electrical Engineering: analog circuits, signals and systems, control systems) or B2 (Mechanical Engineering: mechanics of materials, kinematics and dynamics, machine design) at the time of the exam, not in advance. This structure and the section list above reflect the syllabus as published for GATE 2027; because the paper has never been conducted before, there is no actual exam paper yet to confirm how marks are distributed question-by-question within each part, and the weightage figures here are drawn from the section-level mark split in the syllabus rather than from any observed pattern of past papers.

How to prepare

There is no RA-specific previous year paper to practice on, and that changes the shape of preparation compared to an established GATE paper.

  1. Treat the official syllabus PDF as the single source of truth for scope. With no past papers to infer emphasis from, over- or under-preparing a topic is a real risk, so stick to what the syllabus actually lists rather than what similar-sounding papers have historically emphasised.
  2. Borrow previous year questions from the source papers. The control systems, circuits and mechanics content in Part A and Part B overlaps substantially with long-running GATE ME and GATE EE syllabi. Solving ME/EE PYQs on those specific sub-topics is the closest available substitute for RA-specific practice, even though the overall paper composition will differ.
  3. Build the robotics-specific core from standard robotics and mechatronics textbooks, since kinematics, coordinate transformations and industrial automation are less commonly tested elsewhere in GATE and have no borrowed PYQ pool to lean on.
  4. Decide on Part B (Electrical vs Mechanical) early, and prepare it to the same depth as an actual GATE EE or ME candidate would for that subset of topics, rather than as an afterthought, since it is 25 of the paper’s 100 marks.
  5. Expect the first year or two of RA papers to be the closest thing to a reference point once they exist. Until then, mock tests can only be approximate, since no test-series provider has real RA exam data to calibrate difficulty or timing against.

A note on General Aptitude

General Aptitude is 15 marks in every GATE paper, RA included, and it is tested the same way regardless of how new or established the subject paper is: verbal reasoning, quantitative aptitude and analytical reasoning, independent of the Robotics & Automation syllabus itself. For a new paper where the subject-specific sections carry real uncertainty around difficulty and pattern, GA is comparatively the most predictable place to bank marks, and worth preparing with the same regularity as for any other GATE paper.

GATE RA is genuinely new, so there are no RA-specific previous year papers to fall back on. The practical workaround is to borrow PYQs from the exams RA is built out of: GATE ME and GATE EE papers for the control systems, mechanics and circuits portions, and standard robotics/mechatronics coursework problems for kinematics and sensors/actuators: while treating the official syllabus PDF as the only authoritative source for scope, since there is no pattern of past questions to cross-check it against.
