GATE Agricultural Engineering sits at an unusual intersection: it borrows fluid mechanics and surveying from Civil Engineering, IC engine theory and machine design from Mechanical Engineering, and then layers on subjects that exist nowhere else in GATE: crop and food process engineering, dairy engineering, and watershed and drainage design. Most candidates come from B.Tech Agricultural Engineering programs, though students from allied Farm Machinery or Food Technology backgrounds also attempt it, usually aiming at ICAR-JRF, state agricultural universities, ICAR institutes, or PSU roles tied to irrigation and farm-mechanization departments.
