What is the exam pattern for GATE PI?
65 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours: 15 marks General Aptitude, 13 marks Engineering Mathematics and 72 marks core PI subjects, mixing MCQ, MSQ and Numerical Answer Type questions.
Is GATE PI the same as GATE Mechanical (ME)?
No. PI shares General Engineering topics (mechanics, thermal, fluids) with ME but replaces ME's design and heat transfer depth with dedicated Industrial Engineering, Quality & Reliability, and Operations Research sections: so a pure ME aspirant cannot switch to PI without covering these separately.
Which sections carry the most weight in GATE PI?
Manufacturing Processes I and II (casting, forming, joining, machining and metrology combined) are the single largest block, followed by General Engineering and Operations Research/Operations Management: together these three account for most of the subject marks.
How many candidates take GATE PI compared to core papers like ME or CS?
PI is a comparatively low-volume paper with far fewer test-takers than ME or CS, which also means fewer coaching resources and PYQ discussions are available online, making disciplined self-study from standard textbooks more important than for larger papers.
