Frequently asked questions

What is the exam pattern for GATE AE?

65 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours: 15 marks of General Aptitude and 85 marks of core Aerospace subjects and Engineering Mathematics, mixing MCQ, MSQ and Numerical Answer Type questions.

Which subjects should I prioritise in GATE AE?

Aerodynamics and Aircraft Structures together carry the largest share of subject marks, followed closely by Flight Mechanics and Propulsion. Space Dynamics is smaller in weightage but is often a scoring, low-ambiguity topic if prepared well.

Is GATE AE a low-competition paper compared to CS or ME?

Fewer candidates appear for AE than for the large branches, but the syllabus is narrower and more specialised too, so the paper still demands the same depth of preparation: a smaller applicant pool doesn't translate into an easier cutoff.

Do I need prior exposure to aircraft design software for GATE AE?

No. GATE AE tests fundamentals: governing equations, derivations and standard numericals: not any CAD or simulation tool. Software experience is irrelevant to this exam.
